What is your goal for your massage? Goals for massage are unique to the individual. Some reasons for seeking bodywork include:

  1. relaxation of a specific set of muscles or the entire body;
  2. increased circulation;
  3. reduction of stress;
  4. achieving greater awareness of your body/mind connection;
  5. increased energy;
  6. lymphatic drainage;
  7. spiritual health and well-being;
  8. release of tension;
  9. treatment of soft tissue injury;
  10. release of toxins;
  11. achieving a greater sense of self;
  12. improved self-confidence.

There are many other goals and benefits associated with massage therapy. The key is to communicate your goal(s) and we will work together.

Massage and Bodywork To Help You Live Better.
Integrated Massage Therapy in Nashville, Tennessee

I am trained in multiple modalities; Swedish-Esalen Massage, Nuad Borarn/ Thai-Yoga Massage, Acupressure, Neuromuscular Re-Education Therapy, Reiki, Lymphatic Drainage Massage (LDP). My sessions are a combination of this training, blending these techniques for individualized massage sessions.

I focus bodywork in two ways; Deep Tissue Swedish routine on a table and Nuad Borarn/Thai-Yoga Massage routine upon a futon mat placed on the floor. You may receive an hour, ninety-minute or two-hour session. My studio is located in Nashville, Tennessee. Outcalls in the Nashville area are available at an additional charge.

“Everyone needs some Carter!”
--Kent Blazy, January 2002

Speak your needs. While I am intuitive and aspire to read the hints your body gives me, communication is essential to ensuring the greatest benefit of any bodywork. Don’t hesitate to offer guidance on how your session should proceed.

Swedish-Esalen Massage

Swedish-Esalen massage involves manipulation of the muscles and connective tissues of the body, nudging bound-up muscles, drawing forth expanded movement for relaxation while increasing circulation, aiding detoxification, improving skin tone and facilitating restful sleep. I received my training in the Swedish-Esalen tradition at Cumberland Institute for Wellness Education in Brentwood, Tennessee. You can find more information from the Esalen website.

Nuad Borarn - Song of Bodywork

Nuad Borarn is a Buddhist form of physiotherapy, it is said to have been developed over 2,500 years ago by the personal physician to the Buddha. The purpose of Thai Massage is to stimulate and enhance the flow of life energy by pressing, holding, or stretching along energy lines present in the body. In the United States this style is know as Thai-Assisted-Yoga Massage. The movement of Nuad Borarn leaves the recipient energized and fluid. Thai Massage is part of the greater practice of traditional Thai medicine, which includes three main branches. The third branch, which includes bodywork, massage or yoga therapy, and exercise, is practiced all over Thailand and the world. The application is extremely diverse in its scope and techniques, varying from therapist to therapist and location of practice (school, hospital, wat "temple" or clinic). Traditionally performed on a mat on the floor with the recipient fully dressed in comfortable clothing, This metta (loving kindness) is experienced in the body by applying pressure and stretching with the giver's palms, thumbs, elbows, knees, and feet, kneading and compressing the muscles while working the recipient's body with seamless flow into a series of yoga-like postures to relieve energy blocks and bring awareness to the body. I studied with Michael Buck of the Vedic Conservatory.

Acupressure

Acupressure is an ancient healing art that was developed in Asia over 5,000 years ago. It uses the fingers to press key points on the surface of the skin, which stimulates the body's natural self-curative abilities. When these points are pressed, they release muscular tension and promote the circulation of blood and the body's life force energy to aid healing. Acupuncture and acupressure use the same points and meridians, but acupuncture employs needles, while acupressure uses gentle but firm pressure.

“Carter!  I just wanted to say thanks again for the WONDERFUL massage on Sunday.  I have felt very refreshed this week.”

Neuromuscular Re-Education

Neuromuscular Re-Education is a hands-on technique to evaluate and functionally treat soft tissue injuries that occur via trauma, repetitive motion, or chronic postural fatigue. When an area is injured, whether is it muscle, connective tissue, fascia, tendon, or some combination of these elements (as most injuries are), the body handles this inflammatory response of the tissue to trauma the only way it knows how--through a hyperplasia of the injured tissue. This is followed by fibrous healing and the laying down of a less elastic second-grade, poorly vascularized scar tissue. This is also known as an adhesion. The idea behind Neuromuscular Re-Education is locate the adhesion and scarred area, take the muscle through a functional range of motion while using manual deep pressure to break up the adhesion and restore full range of motion. This in turn allows the body to regain its normal movement pattern, thus decreasing pain and improving function.

I studied Neuromuscular Therapy from Earle Timberlake of Timberlake Massage Therapies.

Reiki

Reiki is a simple, natural method of spiritual healing and self-improvement. Using the bio-electric energy we all create I aim to balance and amplify this energy in you. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

The Reiki Principles authored by Reiki founder Usui Mikao

The secret art of inviting happiness
The miraculous medicine of all diseases

Just for today, do not anger
Do not worry and be filled with gratitude
Devote yourself to your work. Be kind to people.

Every morning and evening, join your hands in prayer.
Pray these words to your heart and chant these words with your mouth

Lymphatic Drainage Massage

A lymphatic drainage massage, sometimes called manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), is a gentle form of massage which stimulates the body’s lymphatic system, allowing it to naturally circulate fluids and increase the body’s metabolism, while aiding the immune system. The lymphatic system can become blocked, causing fluids and toxins to build up, making us more susceptible to colds and viruses. This bodywork is also helpful when allergy and sinus problems fill the cranium.
